Fool’s Gold
Ok seriously, why would I go see this movie? It is obviously going to be a chic flic, it’s probably not going to be “deep” in any way what-so-ever … so why see this movie?! Because, I am a man who has given a girl the proverbial “rock” and that entitles me to go to whatever movie I must to keep her happy and content. If that movie happens to be Fool’s Gold, then so be it.
Yep, so my lovely wife to be, a few friends and I all went to see this movie a couple weeks ago. I said that I wouldn’t write a review on it till someone actually requested one, but seeing as the public is not paying much attention to my blog, nor my needs for activity on this site – fine, I’ll just review it then, bunch of nose pickers.
PROS of the FILM:
Can there honestly be any pros to this film, you ask …? Why yes, yes there is and I will let you in on a little secret, there is about a handful and they are all male actors that provide the pros.
Firstly, Matthew M. (I refuse to write out his last name for fear that I might type it wrong and no, I’m not going to Google it because I’m lazy and I’d much rather just type out ‘M.’ instead! – so back off.) as I was saying, Matthew M. does a superb job as this type of character. He played a similar role in another movie not too long ago oh wait, this is the same character just with a different name! Each movie that is somewhat of a romantic comedy, Matthew M. always seems to have the same charm and delight that tends to bring any woman with the slightest intellect to her knees. No offense to any women out there at all … I mean I know, the guy is good looking and has a great smile, but aren’t you sick of seeing the same act every time? Bah, anyways, he does do a good job at keeping the movie entertaining and moving along. If it wasn’t for his wit and charm every movie he has been in might just fall flat out of the Box Office every time.
Second, Mr. Sutherland did a great job acting as the estranged father that did anything he could to keep everyone happy without really caring to what expense it would come to. Mainly for his daughter, but who really cares about her. I found it interesting how he almost played the part as if he were doped up the whole time and wasn’t really sure what was going on at any particular part of the movie. It just seemed like they stuck him in for decoration while at the same time he was brilliant! I’m not talking Oscar performance by any means, but other than Matthew M. he stole the show from anyone else on screen at the time.
CONS of the FILM:
Ok, so to keep this review short, because I really didn’t like this film I’ll try to keep this rant as short as I can.
First and foremost – my own fiance’ didn’t like this movie! She said it was just “ok…” with that long silence at the end of a sentence that really means it sucks, but because I spent money on it she isn’t going to tell me that it was as terrible as it really was till we get into some conversation about it months later down the road. I should stop there but oh no, I must go on!
Second, can any woman out there act decently in a romantic comedy? Why do we have to hope for a decent male performance every time to save the day for these movies? Is it mainly because a romantic comedy is meant for the female audience and they would rather gander at a male role than a naggy female? (my money is on that theory) Anyhoo – yep, the females definitely did nothing for me in this movie. Is it just me or does Kate Hudson have the most annoying character every time she is in a movie. I don’t want to discredit her acting abilities because I have hope that she can do more. (I saw a glimer of hope in the Skeleton Key movie) But really, she annoyed the hell out of me in this movie and she did the same in ‘How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days’ – and let’s not get me started on that movie. Seriously though people, she just comes across as a cold hearted bitch that really only cares about the sex and whatever he can offer her rather than really care about who he is and what his heart is trying to do, whether or not he was ever successful at it. Ugh, I’m sick of the same ol’ movie like this every time where the guy is a dimwit and the girl expects more…blah blah blah.
I would go on a rant about the other female role in this movie, but if you’ve seen any trailers then you wouldn’t need me to say much more. (sighs in discontent)
Oh, but I can’t let the CONS go without me mentioning the over abundance of nude male chests in this movie. OH MY LORD was this ever meant to be a chic flic or what?!?!? From the get go Matthew M. has his shirt off and I think he might go the whole movie aside for probably 10 mins without his shirt. Not to say the guy doesn’t have reason to flaunt his physique … lord knows I’d be all about it if I had the abs, chest, shoulders – I’m NOT GAY! But honestly, if you are going to direct a movie like this, and expect guys to even want to see it – then that’s fine if you are going to show this dude with his shirt off the whole damn time, but serioulsy; get a better lead woman with a chest and body to match the lead man. Give the guys in the audience something to gawk at too. Ugh, Kate Hudson is not the best thing in the sea, she is pretty but she was hardly in a bathing suit and hardly has anything for the general male audience to be pleased with.
SUMMARY:
Fool’s Gold isn’t the most terrible movie out there, nor is it a bad attempt at a romantic comedy. But this film brings nothing new to the table and left me really disappointed that it was as long as it was and with no substance. I left the movie going – “that’s it?” … Really, if you want a good movie with Matthew M. that will at least be entertaining and have a decent ending, watch ‘Sahara’. If you want to see a decent movie with Kate Hudson in it, then see ‘the Skeleton Key’. Save this movie for a date night rental or even better … a normal rainy day TBS or TNT or USA filc on Sunday afternoon.
FINAL RATING: 6/10

Point well made. Defiantly did not enjoy the movie. Way to go on having to drag me with you to all these chick flicks. You still owe me big for that and I will be expecting a huge apology.
